When the founding members of Willow first came together to create a peer-to-peer support group for families and loved ones of people choosing voluntary assisted dying in Western Australia, we shared our own stories. During that conversation, someone suggested the image of a willow tree—its gentle, enveloping branches and deep roots felt like the perfect representation of the support and comfort we hoped to offer others on this journey.
Even more poignantly, one of our members, Sam, whose mum passed through VAD, had gifted their family a Golden Retriever puppy to help them through their grief. And her name?
With its symbolism of strength and compassion, and in remembrance of both Sam’s beautiful mum and pup Willow, we decided there could be no other name for our group.
